4-8-08 Whitefish,Mt.- As the 2007 - 08 ski and snowboarding season drew to a close, winter sports fans gathered at the Big Mountain summit.
The crowd, estimated to be about 350 skiers and riders, cheered as the last chair arrived at the summit carrying 3 ski patrol members.
When the lift stopped, the crowd burst into applause directed at the lift operators and the patrol. Fireworks and beer were consumed as friends said their goodbyes and made summer plans.
Hikers and skinners are the only persons with access to the 10+ feet of accumulated snow.
New snow has fallen and the weather is expected to be somewhat cooler than usual this spring.
Avalanche danger may be present, particularly beyond the areas that received control work during the ski season.
Hikers are reminded that all rescues are conducted by the Flathead County Sheriff's Department so be prepared to be entirely self reliant. Cell- phone coverage is generally limited to south facing slopes.
Lift maintenance will begin shortly. Hikers and skinners must stay away from the lifts which may start at any time without warning.
The Hellroaring Basin is closed to all entry in the interest of wildlife conser- vation. Grizzly bears are emerging from their winter dens and must not be di- sturbed.
